Members' Start-up Secrets - BRYAN SCOTT

It's our final week of showcasing some of our Inspire members, and this week it's BRYAN SCOTT who has not just one but two companies!  Skyview Aerial Solutions Ltd and Envision360Limited.

We asked Bryan to share some of his secrets to success...here's what he told us:

So...first I run Skyview Aerial Solutions Ltd.  This is a UAV or "drone" company specialising in a wide range of flight applications designed to enhance your business profile.  Our purpose is to meet your greatest aspirations and most stringent objectives by providing a professional, safe, and cost-effective aerial image capture service usilitisng state-of-the-art UAV technology systems and experienced, in-house personnel.  I also run Envision360Ltd - which provide a variety of photography and marketing services.  This begins with our 3D virtual modelling platform, to meet the needs of any project you have in mind. We help place your digital assets for maximum online exposure, giving you the marketing tools that sets you apart from your competitors.

Who would you like to meet through networking?

I would like to meet businesses and industries who have yet to embrace the technology on offer. To meet people & give an insight on how these applications can possibly work for their organisations.

What do you consider to be the benefits of being part of a networking group?

Meeting new people, learning networking skills, learning new ideas and receiving valuable advice from business skills to marketing & business etiquette.

What has been your driving force over the last year?

To market and promote yourself with one company never mind two is a struggle, but i am determined to learn from failure, be open to change, this will allow me to keep on moving towards achieving my goals however small.

What’s been the secret to your journey so far?

Researching, learning & seeking new opportunities, sometimes doing it the old fashioned way - knocking on doors hustling

Who made the biggest impression on you when starting your business?

I haven't been around the business circle long for people to make an impression on me, so I have people who I may admire, Richard Branson for one. His values, beliefs etc. I had an idea like Richard and went for it, I discovered I had more drive and energy than I thought I had. Maybe one day I can leave an impression on someone who knows?

What one piece of advice would you pass on to those considering starting their own business?

Do your research, seek new opportunities and ideas. Set achievable goals!  I like quotes whether it from sport or business coaches so one I remember is:

"Learn, but don't dwell too much on the past mistakes or you may lose sight of your future".

New clients and to help other businesses by passing clients to them

Expanding my business to offer mortgage advice

What’s been the secret to your journey so far?

Hard work, long hours and excellent customer service.

Who made the biggest impression on you when starting your business?

A friend of mine who had set up his company 12 months before me. He said I was mad not to set up on my own due to the many clients I had and the good reputation I have kept (since starting to be an adviser) for looking after people.

Work hard, talk a lot, be productive, the phone won’t ring with no customers. Go find them!

Members' Start-up Secrets - ANNE SOWERBY

The secrets continue...!

This week we are delighted to introduce to you ANNE SOWERBY of Sassy Property Styling.  As well as being the owner of this successful Cumbrian company, Anne is also Chair of the Inspire Network.

First of all, Anne, tell me about Sassy Property Styling:

Sassy Property Styling is your local House Doctor; consultant and interior design specialist. Supporting everyone with interior design services whether you simply want a makeover of one room or refurbishment of a property.  I help you get the best return on your investment when selling your property.  I work within Cumbria, Southwest Scotland and across the North of the UK

Who would you like to get to know through networking?
I would like to make acquaintances with a mixture of like-minded people.  Expand relationships with property developers, estate agents and local trades people who might have common goals for the future.

What do you consider to be the benefits of being part of a networking group?
Sharing knowledge, building friendships and, particularly when self-employed, getting together with other great people in business.

What has been your driving force over the last year?
Increasing my business client base and working with a wide-range of organisations and businesses in the area.

What's been the secret to your journey so far?
Determination, dedication and simply loving what I do!  I use a whole range of social media to attract businesses but I love actually meeting people face-to-face and working with them.

Who made the biggest impression on you when starting your business?
Well...it has to be Anne Maurice - the original House Doctor from the TV programme!

And finally...what one piece of advice would you pass on to those considering starting their own business?
You have to be in it for the long term.  There are very few businesses that are "successful" (as in, make a profit) in the first few years.  It is simply a mixture of total dedication, holding your nerve...and just going for it!

Members' Start-up Secrets - AMY JOHNSTON

Members' Start-up Secrets - AMY JOHNSTON

This week, we are shining the spotlight on AMY JOHNSTON of David Allen Accountants

We asked Amy to tell us about her work with the Accountancy firm, David Allen.  Here's what she said:

First of all, Amy, tell me about David Allen Accountants:
I work for David Allen Accountants - I manage the Workington office and look after a wide variety of clients.

Who would you like to get to know through networking?
I enjoy providing advice to small business owners, in order to help their business reach their full potential.

What do you consider to be the benefits of being part of a networking group?
I love meeting new people and bouncing ideas off each other.

What has been your driving force over the last year?
We have been expanding out Workington office and I am starting to see the rewards of all my hard work.  Setting a realistic goal that I have achieved has kept me motivated.

What's been the secret to your journey so far?
Time off!  Honestly, it is my first piece of advice to anybody!  No matter how much you enjoy something, if you don't plan time out, you will end up getting sick of it.

Who made the biggest impression on you when starting your business?
I am not self-employed but, from a professional point of view, my Gran has got be my biggest motivation.  She doesn't get stressed, just gets on with the job and never has a bad word to say about anybody.  She is also the reason I am now an Accountant as she has done the job for over 40 years.

And finally...what one piece of advice would you pass on to those considering starting their own business?
Plan - and don't expect to reap the rewards instantly.  Starting your own business is a lot of hard work and it can take several months before you begin to turn a profit.  Be prepared for this or you can be really disheartened at the first hurdle.

Members' Start-up Secrets - LUCY HARRISON

Members' Start-up Secrets - LUCY HARRISON

Each week we are showcasing a different member of the Inspire team.

This week, our star member is LUCY HARRISON of The Harrison Network.

We asked Lucy to share some of her secrets to success...here's what she said:

First of all, Lucy, tell me about The Harrison Network:
I help people think straight when the future is unclear. This helps people and organisations navigate change, set and achieve goals and enjoy their work. Through the Harrison Network, we help create dynamic and resourceful business leaders and truly collaborative teams. I am an accredited coach, experienced facilitator and effective trainer.

I also believe passionately that business can be a force for good and this starts at home. I therefore support local entrepreneurs, small charities and good eggs to become more effective through accessibly-priced coaching, workshops and local business networking.

Who would you like to get to know through networking?
People who see that things could be different in their organisation but are not quite sure how to get there.

What do you consider to be the benefits of being part of a networking group?
I like networking as I see how we can become each other's extended sales force.  I also like to hear people's stories and hear how people have found their ways through the various challenges they have met along the way.

What has been your driving force over the last year?
This year has been about consistent, quality delivery for me.  We have quite a few programmes ongoing with different organisations and I am focusing on ensuring these have awesome outcomes for our clients.  This has meant we have had to make some courageous decisions around how to spend our time, but that's business.

What's been the secret to your journey so far?
The secret so far?  Continuous improvement...never standing still.

Who made the biggest impression on you when starting your business?
Sally Fielding of Sally's Cottages.  I watched how hard Sally worked as we both had small children together and she was int he early days of Sally's Cottages.  This put me off starting my business for quite a while until I was completely sure.  She showed me that there are tough decisions when you run a business and have a young family.  But I saw that you can do it...you can tread the line between family life and working life if you believe in what you are doing.

And finally...what one piece of advice would you pass on to those considering starting their own business?
Profit is the oxygen of any business; without it there is no business, so don't ignore it.  But if oxygen is the purpose of your life, you might want to look long and hard at it.

Inspire's November Fundraiser

This month we are joining with the Harrison Network North Lakes networking group.

Our guest speaker will be Pam Hall from the Wool Clip - a co-operative based in Caldbeck.  With 14 members, made up of spinners, dyers, rug makers, knitters, crocheters, weavers and felt makers, as well as designers and farmers, they work as a co-operative, enabling them to run a small shop as a social enterprise - thereby giving one another access to each other’s skills and knowledge on everything from equipment and techniques, to suppliers and local history.   For more on Pam Hall and the Wool Clip, visit their website: http://www.woolclip.com/about-us/members/
